DESCRIPTION:Time: 11.00 am – 1.00 pm\nOptional breakout rooms for further discussion will be available after the event until 1:30pm \nWe have some interesting presentations focussing on this important area of care: \n\nSub-optimal decisions and accepting these as a practitioner\nDr Rachel Woolrich\, Principal Clinical Psychologist\, the Oxford Psychological Medicine Centre.\nAs a practitioner\, patients in your care may take what you consider to be sub-optimal decisions for their care. In this session Dr Woolrich will explore how best as a practitioner to recommend a direction of treatment or whilst not unduly influencing patient decisions. And how you can square acceptance of such decisions with the knowledge and conviction that you have provided best care.\nUnderstanding the roots of psychological distress\nDr John Ashworth\, Counselling Psychologist\, South West Neuromuscular Operational Delivery Network\, Bristol\nGetting a diagnosis of MND is devastating and throughout its course the disease presents many more challenges – both physical and emotional. In this session Dr Ashworth examines some commonly experienced stressors and explores how as practitioners you can provide support\, including when your patient expresses thoughts of suicide.\n\nAs usual there will be lots of opportunity to discuss what you have heard and explore how it could be useful to your practice.

Laynie welcomes you to come with questions for discussion. \nAbout the Speaker: Laynie Dratch\, ScM CGC is a board-certified genetic counselor for the Penn Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) Center and Penn Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Center in the Department of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the co-founder and chair of the ALS/FTD Working Group within the National Society of Genetic Counselor’s Neurogenetics group\, as well as the co-founder of the annual Penn Familial FTD/ALS Conference. Her research interests include the lived experiences of individuals at risk of developing ALS/FTD spectrum disorders\, and genetic counseling access and service delivery. Laynie completed her master’s in genetic counseling at the Johns Hopkins University / National Institutes of Health genetic counseling training program and completed her undergraduate studies at Colgate University where she graduated summa cum laude with a BA in neuroscience and a minor in psychology.
