To test new drugs and treatments for ALS/MND, researchers and pharmaceutical companies must perform clinical trials. A clinical trial is a therapeutic or observational research study to test whether a new drug or therapy is safe and effective for use in humans. Prior to any clinical trial, a drug must pass through a series of steps.
For ALS/MND, there are many potential drugs and therapies currently undergoing clinical trials. Clinical trials are essential to new drug approvals. However, enrollment in a clinical trial should always be voluntary. People living with ALS/MND must consent prior to enrollment and have the right to know all pertinent details surrounding the trial.
Clinical Trial Information
Here are links to databases of known clinical trials for ALS/MND.
- ALS/MND Clinical Trial Navigator: The ALS Therapy Development Institute created the ALS Trial Navigator is a comprehensive resource for making informed decisions about participating in ALS/MND clinical trials. Use this innovative tool learn about clinical trials and get a personalized list of ALS/MND trials based on your eligibility and preferences. (Language: English)
- ALS International Clinical Trial Database: The Associazione conSLAncio Onlus created the ALS/MND International Clinical Trial Database. Built on a multi-lingual website, this features users to view the current status of clinical trials taking place at sites in, or close to, Italy. Each trial is linked to the official trial registry where users can directly access study objectives, eligibility criteria and study contacts. (Language: Italian)
- HEALEY ALS Platform Trial: The HEALEY ALS Platform Trial aims to accelerate the process of drug development and the path for effective treatment for ALS/MND by testing multiple drugs simultaneously and adaptively. This design has been seen to be successful in cancer trials. Participants will have an equal chance to be randomized to all regimens that are active at the time of screening. Once randomized to a regimen, participants will be randomized to receive either the study drug or placebo. New regimens will be continuously added as new investigational products become available. The trial is recruiting in the United States only and will enroll additional participants as each new regimen is available. (Language: English)
